Nosotras, las putas (2001)

Concept
In 1989, Gail Peterson, sociologist, activist and researcher interested in the psychodynamics of oppression and in the forging of alliances between women, publishes “Nosotras, las Putas”  (Talasa).  The texts deal with the role of the prostitute within the sexual transaction – economic in the bourgeois society, the alienation of the whore, the freedom of choice, “victvism”, the “bad woman”, the role of the macho-man, the feminist movement, the abolitionist movement and, in general, sexual commerce treated as just another form of business.

Two fundamental question arise from the writings. The first is economic, the recognition of of these women as a collectve of working women. The other question is social, the need to to modify a series of prejudices which morally and socially condemn prostitution and introduce a hypocritical illegality. “What the world needs is justice, not charity” wrote Mary Wollstonecraft in A Vindication of the Rights of Women (1792).
