Throughout history there have been —and still exist today— groups of people who have decided to break away from the dominant society to follow an alternative way of life. These intentional communities have experimented with their own diverse forms of community life to be consistent with their principles and to challenge the established order in search of a better world.
The motivation of the founders and participants of these communities may have been political, religious, artistic, linguistic or cultural identity, pacifist, vital concern for the future of the planet… But all of them have functioned as concrete utopias that outlined a horizon of possibilities to change the life of our societies, not with fantastic lucubrations, but with practical action on the ground.
The cases studied in this book are examples of a transformative and inspiring current that has centuries of history behind it.
